MUSCATINE, Iowa — Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden said Tuesday that voters have the chance to send President Trump and Sen. Joni Ernst a message by rallying behind him in the Iowa caucuses next week.
Mr. Biden fired back at Ms. Ernst, the Iowa Republican who suggested this week that the caucuses on Tuesday will serve as a referendum on Mr. Biden and his son Hunter, who have been at the center of Mr. Trump’s impeachment defense.
“You can ruin Donald Trump’s night by caucusing with me,” Mr. Biden said. “You can ruin Joni Ernst night as well.”
Ms. Ernst has emerged as one of Mr. Trump’s most vocal defenders on Capitol Hill.
“Iowa caucuses are this next Monday evening,” Ms. Ernst said Monday. “And I’m really interested to see how this discussion today informs and influences the Iowa caucus voters, those Democratic caucus-goers. Will they be supporting Biden at this point? Not certain about that.”
Mr. Biden said that Ms. Ernst “spilled the beans” on the GOP’s hopes of torpedoing his candidacy.
“Pretty subtle, huh?” Mr. Biden said.
