White students at Concordia College event for Martin Luther King Jr. Day were warned that they all harbor a “nasty little racist inside.”
The education watchdog Campus Reform detailed the Minnesota school’s “How to Embrace Your Inner Racist: A Session for White People,” which was guided by Ahmed Afzaal, a professor of Religion and Social Activism.
“[Students must] recognize and acknowledge that there is a nasty little racist inside them, and do so without becoming angry or defensive,” a description of the event on the colleges website read, Campus Reform reported Tuesday.
An attendee told the watchdog that a morning session of the event included roughly 70 students.
One method employed to inculcate the students was “Acceptance and Commitment Training (or ‘ACT’),” which relies on “psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy in order to inspire behavioral change,” Campus Reform added.
Mr. Afzaal and representatives for Concordia College did not respond to the website’s requests for comment prior to publication.
